In Memory of Lawrence Dubin

Dear SSMR Members, It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that world-renowned andrologist and urologist, Dr. Lawrence Dubin, died on 27 April 2018, at the age of 84.

Born in New Jersey, Dr. Dubin attended Yale University for both undergraduate and medical school education. After completing a residency in Urology at New York University and Bellevue Hospitals, he went on to spend the majority of his career investigating and advancing the field of male infertility. He rose to the rank of Clinical Professor of Urology at NYU School of Medicine, where he co-authored more than 50 research articles and several book chapters, many with his working partner of more than 35 years, Dr. Richard Amelar.

He is perhaps best-known for the Dubin-Amelar varicocele classification, a clinical grading system which assesses severity of varicocele based on physical examination. In addition to serving in various society leadership roles, he was a founding member of the American Society of Andrology. In 2002, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine.

This pioneer in the fields of Andrology and Reproductive Urology will be truly missed by many.
